How Radiant Bubble Insulation Works
Radiant insulation works when the reflective foil surface faces an open air space. The reflective barrier helps reduce radiant heat transfer, making it ideal for sheds, metal roofs, walls, garages and many building applications.
When installed correctly with an air gap, foil bubble insulation can greatly improve the total R-value of the building system.

Important Installation Notes
- The reflective foil surface must face an air space to work correctly.
- For best results, allow a thermal air gap, between metal roof and insulation of approximately 40mm to 100mm.
- When installing in a new shed roof, allow the bubble insulation to sag slightly between the rafters or top hats to create the air cavity.
- Overlap insulation by 150mm between rolls, or use a 50mm overlap with foil tape.
- The shiny foil side should face the sky when used under roofing.
The Concept of Radiant Insulation
Standard insulation products such as fibreglass, foam and cellulose mainly reduce heat transfer by trapping air. This helps reduce convection, but radiant heat can still be a major source of heat transfer in Australian sheds, roofs and building envelopes.
Reflective bubble foil insulation helps reduce radiant heat transfer by using low-emittance aluminium foil surfaces. The foil surface can reflect up to 97% of radiant heat when installed correctly with an adjacent air gap.
This is why a thin reflective material can perform extremely well as part of a complete building system when the correct air space is included.
Simple Heat Test Explanation
Foil based insulation works by helping bounce radiant heat away before it enters your roof space or shed.
- If you put your hand directly on a hot fry pan, you would burn your hand.
- If you pushed foil insulation hard against the hot plate with no air gap, heat would still transfer through.
- But if the foil bubble insulation is held above the hot surface with an air gap, the radiant heat transfer is greatly reduced.
That air gap is the key reason reflective insulation performs so well.
